The other day when I talked about how we were going to serve the food I completely neglected the drinks. One problem we have is that we don’t know how much booze to buy, but hopefully we’ll be able to buy everything from a place that lets you return unopened bottles. Having said that, our plan is to provide:
- Water (duh) and maybe something like lemonade
- Sodas like Coke, in glass bottles
- Beer
- Red and white wine
- Champagne
- An assortment of liquor
- Kalimotxo, a really popular drink among young people here which is basically Coke and (bad) wine mixed in equal proportions. I think it’s really gross so I don’t drink it but most of my friends do.
For the sodas and beer, we have several aluminum pails that I bought a year ago on sale at Ikea because I love this look and I knew I’d be able to use them some day. They’re meant to be used for plants, but they don’t have any holes in them (you have to make the holes yourself) so they work for us. We’ll just need to buy a ton of ice.

Come to think of it, this could also work for the white wine and champagne:

Although that means I might have to hunt down a couple more pails.
For the red wine, one of these from Ikea might be nice:

I could even try painting it another color since it’s real wood. I’m not a wine expert, but I do know you’re not supposed to keep red wine in ice, so hopefully we’ll have a shaded, cool spot for the red wine.
I’ve thought about the liquor for a long time. My brother told me a friend of his (who’s worked at a bar) had volunteered to come and help serve mixed drinks. We’ll probably set a small table in that case. Although I’ve always loved bar carts, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy this from Ikea, so who knows:

That just leaves water and kalimotxo… the perfect way to serve those two drinks would be in glass beverage dispensers. I looove those. You should check my party/wedding inspiration images, like these:

From Crate & Barrel, although no longer available

The problem is that I’ve searched high and low for them and they simply do not exist in Spain. And they’re very expensive to ship. Last summer when we went to Chicago I considered bringing a couple of them with me, but it was just too unpractical. Just when I was about to give up though, I found a way I might be able to have them. We’ll just make them ourselves!
My uncle has a glassware shop and the other day he told me people sometimes ask him to drill holes in bottles for twinkle lights:

When I heard that, a lightbulb turned on in my head. While looking for (drinking) glasses online, I had come across a Spanish website that sold super cheap glass jars. I asked him whether we could drill a hole for a spigot and he said that it’ll probably work! So I’ve ordered a box of five gallon-sized glass jars (I wanted a bigger size, but that was the biggest they had) and I’m waiting for it to arrive. Fingers crossed it works and that I get to have the pretty beverage dispensers.
Also, some of you might have seen a couple of pics on my Pinterest… they’re from the wedding dress! My friend Maite is making me a trial dress with cheap fabric to see how it fits and then she’ll make the real one, so that’s not the actual dress, but I think it looks great!

Tu vestido
I love the shape of the dress! Ah! Your friend is very talented
I also love the idea of the pails for beverages (maybe you can hang some bunting to add some color to them). I hope everything works out with the jars!!
Thanks! I love the shape too. And the bunting idea is great!
I saw those dress images yesterday and thought it might be a trial version. It looks fantastic! I loved the fullness on the bottom and I liked the back a lot too! It’s going to be gorgeous!
I am working on the whole beverage thing too. I love those galvanized pails- might have to find me a few of those!! We have some of the beverage dispensers- I wanted glass ones but I found plastic ones for really cheap that we used for the stag and doe. We’ll use those again for the wedding with iced tea and lemonade. We also might be getting a slushie machine so we can have daquiris and margaritas. I have to figure out how to set up the whole bar though with the beer and wine, etc. Thanks for the inspiration- I love a lot of your ideas!!
A slushie machine sounds wonderful! I’m jealous!
Glad to hear you have a lead on those glass jars!! That whole concept is very cool. I’m also a big fan of the galvanized buckets for beer and drink storage! I’ve never had Kalimotxo, but I may have to try it.
Please don’t blame me if you try it and it’s terrible! Haha. I really don’t how people drink here, but it’s the go-to drink.
That kalimotxo drink sounds horrible! But I don’t like coke, and I do like good wine, so there you go! I’m also a big fan of the pails full of drinks, and making glass jars into dispensers sounds awesome! It always helps to have freinds/family with useful skills!
It really is! And yeah, I’m so thankful that everyone has offered their help
The dress is beautiful! And the whole wedding is going to be so lovely – I love your ideas for all of the different kinds of beverages.
Thanks! I really appreciate it.
I love those glass beverage dispensers. I’ve had my eye on some plastic ones at Target (they’re even stackable) but I don’t have any use for them right now so I’ve had to resist.
Oh those stackable ones are also cool, too!
That drink sounds odd! lol
I hope the jars work for you!
Yeah, it’s definitely odd, haha.
I am such a fan of the galvanized buckets – they look so beautiful, yet so welcoming at the same time!
